UNITED FOR A BARRIER-FREE ONTARIO
September 11, 2012
SUMMARY
On August 15, 2012, the McGuinty Government posted for public comment a draft new regulation that is intended to address barriers in the built environment that impede persons with disabilities from access to public spaces.
We are delighted that the Inclusive Design Institute at OCAD University in Toronto is organizing a public forum to discuss and debate this draft regulation. The Inclusive Design Institute is inviting a panel of experts to comment on it, and will invite feedback and questions from the audience.
This event is open to all, but you need to sign up to attend. We set out the invitation from the Inclusive Design Institute of OCAD U below. We are honoured that AODA Alliance chair David Lepofsky has been invited to give a background on the AODA and the Built Environment Accessibility Standard for which we have been campaigning.
This event will help you, us and everyone formulate their input to the Government on this draft regulation, which must be submitted by October 1, 2012.
We encourage one and all to sign up to attend this event. The Inclusive Design Institute advises us that American Sign Language interpretation and captioning will be provided. We congratulate OCAD University on another impressive venture to support the campaign for full accessibility for persons with disabilities in Ontario.

ANNOUNCEMENT FROM OCAD UNIVERSITY
URL: http://apache.ocad.ca/events_calendar/eventdetail.php?id=4538
The Inclusive Design Institute at the Ontario College of Art and Design University (OCAD University) is hosting a public forum to gather public comment on the Proposed Amendment to the Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation (Ontario Regulation 191/11) under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 – Design of Public Spaces. The goal of the Accessibility Standards for the Built Environment is to remove barriers to access in public spaces and buildings to make it easier for all Ontarians—including people with disabilities, seniors and families—to access the places where they work, travel, shop and play.
The Inclusive Design Institute (IDI) will host a roundtable discussion of the amendment by a panel of experts and stakeholders. Comments and discussion by our expert panel will be followed by a session for open questions and discussion. An overview of the background to this proposed accessibility standard will be provided by David Lepofsky, Chair of the non-partisan Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act Alliance, the community coalition that has spearheaded the province-wide campaign to make Ontario fully accessible for persons with disabilities.
The goal of this event is to document and send the conclusions and comments from the roundtable discussion to the Ministry of Community and Social Services before the deadline for comments on the amendment, October 1, 2012.
Date: Tuesday, September 18, 2012
Time: 11:30 am to 1:30 pm
Location: OCAD University, 49 McCaul Street, Toronto.
The forum size is limited. Please confirm your attendance by email to idi@ocadu.ca by September 14, 2012 so that we may reserve a seat for you.
American Sign Language interpretation and captioning will be provided.
