June 2, 2023

Toronto must not re-open the question of whether to ban e-scooters! If you can take one minute to help the accessibility cause in the next 48 hours, please send a short email to the City of Toronto Infrastructure and Environment Committee. Tell them not to allow e-scooters in Toronto. It would be great if you could also tell them that you support the AODA Alliance’s June 1, 2023, brief to the Infrastructure and Environment Committee, which opposes allowing e-scooters.

We emphasize that we don’t want anything done that would limit the use of mobility devices for people with disabilities. We are only opposing kick-style electric scooters.

You can find our brief on the AODA Alliance website at https://www.aodaalliance.org/whats-new/read-the-aoda-alliances-june-1-2023-brief-to-the-city-of-toronto-infrastructure-and-environment-committee-which-opposes-toronto-re-opening-its-ban-on-electric-scooters/ We had to pull it together in a ridiculous rush. We learned just this past Monday that the Infrastructure and Environment Committee was going to consider re-opening the issue of Toronto’s ban on e-scooters at its June 5, 2023, meeting.

Two years ago, after a long and hard campaign by advocates for people with disabilities and seniors, the Toronto City council wisely voted unanimously to keep e-scooters banned in Toronto. Toronto law enforcement is doing a very poor job of enforcing that ban. Making this worse, Toronto City Councillor Paul Ainslie wants to get rid of that ban on e-scooters – a ban he voted for just two years ago.

You can write the Infrastructure and Environment Committee at iec@toronto.ca

You only need to write a sentence or two, if you wish. They meet this Monday, so there’s no time to waste! Get others to do the same!

Learn more about this issue by visiting the AODA Alliance website’s e-scooters page.

We again apologize for so many AODA Alliance Updates this week. There has just been too much going on! The lives of volunteer disability advocates are, to say the least, rarely quiet.
